ALEA: 7 died on Alabama roadways, waterways during Independence Day weekend

(WDNG) – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on Monday released statistics from the Independence Day weekend that show seven fatalities were investigated by state troopers.

Over the 72-hour holiday travel period from Friday through Sunday, four traffic fatalities and three boating fatalities were investigated, according to a Monday statement. One of the traffic fatalities was a pedestrian and another was not wearing a seat belt. None of those killed on Alabama waterways were wearing life jackets.

Those numbers are down from the same travel period last year. During the 2014 travel period, state troopers investigated 11 fatalities.

Statistics from the ALEA do not include fatalities investigated by local law enforcement agencies.

ALEA secretary Spencer Collier said summer is far from over and urges everyone to be cautious while driving or boating.

More statistics about enforcement of traffic and boating laws are expected to be released later this week.
